V Narayanan ISRO Chairman Biography
India is celebrating as Dr. V. Narayanan, a brilliant rocket scientist, has been chosen as the new Chairman of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). Dr. Narayanan is not just an expert in rocket engines and space technology but also a man with a heart full of dreams for India’s space missions. He will officially take charge on January 14, 2025, succeeding the outgoing Chairman, S. Somanath.
This is a big moment for ISRO as they continue working on exciting projects like sending astronauts to space and exploring other planets.
Humble Beginnings in Tamil Nadu
Dr. Narayanan’s story started in a small village called Melakattu near Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district. He was a bright student who always worked hard:
- He finished school in his hometown and stood first in his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DME).
- He joined the Institution of Engineers and became an Associate Member in Mechanical Engineering.
- Later, he went to IIT Kharagpur, one of India’s top colleges, to study M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering. He graduated with First Rank and a Silver Medal.
- To reach even greater heights, he earned a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, becoming an expert in rocket science.
A Career Filled with Dedication
Dr. Narayanan’s career began in the private sector, where he worked with companies like BHEL and Madras Rubber Factory. But his true passion was space. He joined ISRO in 1984, and since then, he has done amazing work:
- He helped create powerful rockets like the ASLV and Rohini Sounding Rockets.
- He led the development of the cryogenic stage for the GSLV Mk III rocket, which is used for heavy space missions.
- As the Director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), he worked on engines for Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, India’s first attempt to send humans to space.
Making India Proud in Space Missions
Dr. Narayanan’s contributions have made India proud:
- Chandrayaan Missions: He led the creation of rocket engines that successfully took Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3 to the Moon.
- Gaganyaan Mission: He guided the team in making rockets safe for humans and tested the crew escape system, an important step in India’s astronaut mission.

Dr. Narayanan has received many awards for his extraordinary work, including:
- Gold Medal from the Astronautical Society of India.
- Distinguished Alumni Award from IIT Kharagpur.
- National Design Award (2019) and National Aeronautical Prize (2019).
