Makhanlal Chaturvedi was born into a Gaur Brahmin family. His father, Nandlal Chaturvedi, and mother, Sundaribai, instilled traditional values in him. He completed his primary education in Babai and later studied languages like Sanskrit, Bengali, and English. At the age of 16, he became a schoolteacher but soon shifted his focus to writing and journalism.
Inspired by Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, he actively joined the national freedom struggle, participating in movements like the Non-Cooperation Movement and Quit India Movement, for which he was jailed multiple times.
