Early Life
Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874, in San Francisco, California. His father, William Frost, was a journalist, and his mother, Isabelle, came from Scotland. Robert had a tough childhood. His father passed away when Robert was just 11 years old, and his family had to move to Massachusetts to live with relatives. This move to the countryside would later inspire much of his poetry.
School and Writing
Robert wasn’t a fan of school at first. He dropped out several times but eventually finished high school. He even became the top student, or valedictorian, along with his future wife, Elinor White.
Later, he tried going to college, first at Dartmouth and then at Harvard, but he never completed his degree. Despite this, Robert loved reading and writing and was determined to become a poet. His first poem, “My Butterfly: An Elegy,” was published in a magazine in 1894.
The Turning Point
Robert struggled to get his poems noticed in the U.S., so in 1912, he took his family to England. There, he published his first poetry book, “A Boy’s Will,” and later, “North of Boston.” These books became very popular, and when Robert returned to the U.S. in 1915, he was already famous.
One of his most famous poems, “The Road Not Taken,” is about the choices we make in life and how they shape us.
